Effexor: Medication of
choice for depression?

Medication: Why is it prescribed?
is frequently prescribed for the treatment of depression and at times
for the treatment of anxiety and anxiety disorders. Effexor is most
often prescribed for depression and specifically for the type of
depression which effects daily functioning, with symptoms frequently
including such things as changes in sleep habits, decreased sex drive,
appetite, coordination, increased fatigue, feelings of worthlessness,
difficulty concentrating, slow thinking and suicidal thoughts and
is frequently prescribed to relieve unusually high levels of anxiety
such as in the case of generalized anxiety disorder. This condition
is commonly indicated by constant feelings of anxiety for a period of
at least six months. These symptoms usually include at least three of
these six symptoms: sleep disturbance, restlessness, irritability,
fatigue, poor concentration, and muscle tension.
Effexor is usually prescribed to be taken two to three times a day.
Effexor XR, (the extended-release form), permits once a day dosing.
–What you really need to know:
may result in a fatal reaction when it is used in conjunction with
other medications of the drug family referred to as MAO (monoamine
oxidase inhibitors). These medications include the antidepressants
Nardil and Parnate. You should absolutely never take Effexor while
taking one of these medications, and you should never begin therapy
with Effexor within 14 days of discontinuing treatment with one of
these drugs. Always allow at least seven days between your last dose
of Effexor and your first dose of an MAO inhibitor.
should I take Effexor?
should be taken with food, exactly as prescribed. It commonly takes
several weeks for this drug to actually take effect and for you to
start feeling some improvement. You should periodically check with
your doctor about how you are progressing with this medication.
XR is taken once a day at the same time every day. You should swallow
the capsule whole or take it with water. Never divide it, crush or
happen to miss a dose…
not have to make up for a missed dose. If you do miss a dose of
Effexor, you should skip the missed dose and continue with your next
scheduled dosage. You should never take two doses at once.
store Effexor in a tightly closed container at room temperature.
Also, it is important to protect it from excessive moisture and heat.
