These medications include the antidepressants Nardil and Parnate.  You should absolutely never take Effexor while taking one of these medications, and you should never begin therapy with Effexor within 14 days of discontinuing treatment with one of these drugs.  Always allow at least seven days between your last dose of Effexor and your first dose of an MAO inhibitor.

How should I take Effexor?

Effexor should be taken with food, exactly as prescribed.  It commonly takes several weeks for this drug to actually take effect and for you to start feeling some improvement.  You should periodically check with your doctor about how you are progressing with this medication.

Effexor XR is taken once a day at the same time every day.  You should swallow the capsule whole or take it with water.  Never divide it, crush or chew it.

If you happen to miss a dose…

You do not have to make up for a missed dose.  If you do miss a dose of Effexor, you should skip the missed dose and continue with your next scheduled dosage.  You should never take two doses at once.
