Senior Housing: Additional
Terms and Options
Some
additional senior housing terms are used to describe options available
in many parts of the country, including in St. Louis, Missouri. Some
of the following senior services are not usually thought of as "senior
housing" by strict definition (such as adult day care services), but
actually do provide much of the
same type of assistance provided by
more traditional senior housing providers.
Senior Housing
Terms and Options:
Adult Daycare Services or Day Treatment:
Adult day care can be a bridge for those who
wish to remain in their homes but need assistance and personal-care,
and can no longer cook for themselves. Adult day care also
provides respite for families and frequently serves as an "outing" for
persons seldom able to leave their homes.
Senior Housing - Congregate Living:
This type of senior housing option may be
available to individuals who want to share activities and frequently
one meal per day. Also, many times, housekeeping is also
provided.
Senior Housing- Continuing Care Retirement
Communities:
This senior housing option is when a continuum
of services are offered such as independent living cottages or
apartments, assisted-living and a nursing facility on-site or nearby.
Some charge an entrance/membership fee (or endowment) that can vary by
life expectancy. The price range is frequently between $2000 and
$150,000 plus, which enables reduced monthly rates. Some fees
are partially refundable according to prearranged published terms.
Some guarantee lifetime continued-care for as long as you reside in
the community.
Senior Housing-Extended Care/Subacute Care
Hospital Rooms:
Some hospitals offer private rooms on a
temporary basis for those who cannot go home, but who do not want to
move into a continuing care nursing facility.
Senior Housing-Independent Living:
This is a broad term encompassing many
different types of senior housing including independent living within
a congregate housing arrangement, meaning that a person maintains
their own living area and attends to their own personal care needs.
Senior Housing-Retirement Community:
This is senior housing for older adults with
amenities such as transportation and social activities. Onsite
meals, banking, health screenings, pharmacy and sundry shopping may be
available. All require monthly rental fees with varying lease
terms, security deposits and rental agreements. There are both
profit and nonprofit facilities.
Senior Housing-Subsidized Apartments:
Some senior housing options may be available
to persons who meet low income qualifications. Government programs may
pay additional housing cost that exceed 30-30% of an individual's
income. However, there may be a very long waiting lists in some
areas for these senior housing options.
